Hot Start to 2011 Season

22/02/2011 09:49

The New South Wales Speedway kart club kicked off its 2011 season on a very hot (39 degrees) day on Sunday the 20th Feb and for the  Baines racing it wasn’t the start to the season they were hoping for.

Jake had a very tough field of 15 drivers and his day started ok in heat 1.

Not a lot of passing happened in the race with most drivers finishing where they started from .

Jake  started out of grid 10 and in lap 1 while  trying to avoid an incident fell back to 15 and then drove back to 9th.

Heat 2 saw him start from position 5 but unfortunately Wayne changed gearing looking for a bit more for Jake and went the wrong way slowing the kart down and Jake feel back to 10th .

In heat 3 with the gearing changed back Jake climbed from his 11th starting position to get into 8th by the chequered flag.

The feature saw Jake gridded in 6th position and he held this position and finish 6th.

Overall during the day the team found the sweet spot for the motor and will come back in round 2 and hopefully will achieve a better result.

Wayne’s day however was one to forget.

Moving into the newly formed KT Modified Pro class he was up against some very seasoned and talented drivers and was looking forward to the challenge.

Heat 1 starting from position 7 Wayne had made his way to 3rd place by mid race and was carrying a lot of speed however a turn 3 incident saw him in the middle of it and he was left stranded on the track.

With no where to go Kart 9 plowed into Wayne causing a lot of damage . However team worked hard to repair the damage between heats 1 and 2 to have the number 14 back on track

. The accident bent crash bars, stub axles and the chassis.

With repair completed Wayne lined up in position 3 for heat 2 and was able to drive to the front and win the race by 6 to 7 kart lengths.

Heat 3 is grid high points to the front and with the heat 1 DNF Wayne’s points had him gridded to the back of the field however he was able to redeem this position and finished 4th .

In the feature race Wayne was to start position 3 and by lap 2 he was into second and chasing down race leader State Champion Cameron Coghlan.

Just as Wayne was about to challenge for the lead mechanical gremlins hit and Wayne had another DNF for the day.

The day wasn’t  a total lost for Wayne as the new kart showed it  had plenty of speed and round 2 is looking very good for him and can’t come quick enough so he can put this day behind him and start the climb back in the hampionship points chase.

The boy’s karts looked very impressive on debut and received many positive comments. The donation drive has started and the boys are very appreciative of everyone that donated or supported by buying merchandise and are well on the way of trying to raise the $1k for breast Cancer Research.
